 "good for a child" 2008-08-01
By T. Frost (CA)
This rainmaker is brightly colored and made of plastic, which is good for a young child. It doesn't sound as much like real rain as the more realistic stick-looking ones do, but it's good for a toy and a young child will find it fascinating. Quality construction and good size.

By Happy Traveling Mom (North Carolina)
My son liked this item alot when we first got it. It kept his attention quite a bit. He doesn't play with it much after 3 months, but isn't that the case with most toys and toddlers? It is fun to use with other instruments when listening to music.

 "WONDERFUL" 2008-03-03
By TwinkleToes (Dallas, TX)
This is the most wonderful toy ever invented. I worked with babies in a hospital for two months over the summer and this was the only thing I needed to make them stop crying. Even while they were in what could only be immense pain the remained fascinated with the rainstick. It can be a little bit loud, so it's not ideal for public areas, but seriously, I swear by the rainmaker.

"Pleasing, but not authentic sound" 2007-01-12
By onmymerryway
This rainmaker is really pretty and bright - wonderful visual stimulation for a young child or anyone with visual limitations that are stimulated by bright colors. The size is just right for a toddler or older to use independently. The sound, though pleasing, is not an authentic rain sound that you might get with a wooden rainmaker.

"Almost as good as the Horner Special 20" 2009-10-08
By J. Morse
I bought this recently for my 5 year old grandson He loves it. It sounds and plays like my Horner Special 20. I recommend it 100% for a beginner. and...the price is right As for myself I really love the Suzuki Bluesmaster more than my Horner Special 20. Amazon also has a great price on it. Ian Chadwick's web site has lots of info on it and on many other harmonicas if you want more choices.

By Dale Carter (Chicago, Illinois)
I bought one these cheap harmonicas and guess what? It sounds really nice for the price; could have cost $18.00, and this Pocket Pal' harmonica does cost 18 to 20 bucks here in Chicago. Plays very well; must be able to appreciate quality in a small price. There's nothing wrong with this harmonica. People that commented on the down-side of this product, probably would complain over an even more expensive harmonica.

Love your instrument and it will love you; be gentle, don't attempt to be hard because you're not; be real like PlayerPlayer and not a hater.

 "terrible" 2009-04-07
By Steve Seguiti (Philadelphia, PA)
This is the leakiest harmonica I have ever experienced. I got this for my godson who is six and probably wouldn't know the difference, however if you actually know anything about how harmonicas should sound, this is a joke of a product. I had a pocket pal when I was a kid, and I don't remember it being this bad, but that was before Hohner farmed out its cheap harmonica production to China. Pay $10 more and get a real harp even if you are a beginner.

"Comfortable, air tight, and rich sounding" 2009-06-11
By M. Mason (Alaska USA)
I have played the Golden Melody since 2006. I have played several other harmonicas prior to that, but Hohner Golden Melody is by far the MOST comfortable. The Marine Band harmonicas sound good but have sharp corners that can irritate your hands and make it more difficult to get a good seal around the instrument. This harp is comfortable in both the hands and the mouth. This harp is also VERY tight; meaning the reed covers are snug against the reed plates with no gaps for air to escape. The plastic comb will not warp as will wooden combs (e.g. Hohner Blues Harp Harmonica, Key of C); therefore, these harmonicas stay air tight. The less air that escapes--the less effort it takes for you to get a loud, rich tone. These harmonicas are loud, comfortable, and very responsive to your breathing. I used to play the Hohner Blues Harp but the wooden comb warped over time and caused air leaks. I have also found it easy to bend the notes (in Blues style) on the Golden Melody. Due to the comfort and the efficiency of airflow caused by a plastic comb and tight reed covers, I think this is the BEST choice for a "first harmonica" for beginners. They are comfortable and easy to play. Some professionals (e.g. Jason Ricci) played Golden Melody harps. Although Jason Ricci plays customized harps now, he states that he had played Golden Melody harps for quite awhile. That should be considered a good testimony to the quality of these instruments.

"Limited knowledge, but this one works for me." 2008-12-26
By Wood Wren (U.S.A.)
Being something of a beginner, I cannot use the technical terms many reviewers here can, only give my impressions and experiences. I have several different harps which I use in my learning process, but find myself using this one more often than not. The Key of C seems to sound better and with the book I have seem geared toward this key. I like the rounded edges of this harm; they are more comfortable. The instrument is quite easy to hold (I have small hands) and hitting single notes seems to be easier with this one. I like the sound of this harp. I have little musical talent and need all the help I can get. I carry this one with me. It does have plastic edges and I suppose the wood is better, but I really have no complaints in this area. I can only speak as a beginner, and as a beginner, I do recommend this one. Perhaps those with more experience can make better recommendations and give advice that I do not yet have access to.

"Nice harmonica, but i can't play it." 2007-05-25
By Andrew Tane (Toronto, ON Canada)
This is a nicely built harmonica, easy to play and notes bend easily. However, because of the exposed brass strips above and below the holes along with the stainless steel metal covers, there is a strong bi-metal/galvanic effect. I have a silver filling in the back of one of my front teeth which hurts whenever I play this harmonica. My wife can play it without any problems and just looks at me weird when I describe the problem, but she's only got one or two silver fillings in her back molars. I don't recommend this harmonica to anyone who has silver fillings in the front teeth simply due to the galvanic effect.

Otherwise, this harmonica has a beautiful sound, and is comfortable to hold and play.

 "Even better" 2007-01-12
By CPM (Vinton, VA)
Still just a novice, but bought this more expensive model by looking at the reviews.

WOW, what a nice sound, and still a great price.

I find hitting single notes easier on my Hohner 81 Pocket Pal (still entry level skills), but if I want to sound better than I am, and I'm playing chords, I go for the Golden.

 "Not worth the price" 2009-08-26
By lil (NY, NY USA)
I just received my Hohner Kazoo from the seller and am extremely disappointed. Although item amount is never specified, the picture that accompanies the listing is for a jar of kazoos.

Now, I know that the pictures are not always accurate on Amazon but the original list price is $17.50 and the item weight is 8 ounces so don't think I am out of line for expecting more than one plastic kazoo. There is just no way that this is a $17.50 kazoo which means that I did not save 84% on this purchase when I paid $2.80 as it stated on the product page. I paid $2.80 for a $2.80 kazoo. Not much of a bargain when the same kazoo can be found at numerous sites on the web for 99 cents.

 "Fun toy, pretty inexpensive" 2009-08-17
By A. Duran (California)
Our 10 month old loves this kazoo...we watch him carefully when playing with it because it is not something to just let them use on their own. Could be dangerous if it came apart. Also, the paint on it started to quickly smear off from some biting and gumming so I quickly washed it off (came off easily with some water and rubbing with a towel). I would prefer that they just don't paint it or etch their logo instead.

He smiles and laughs at the noise when daddy plays it, and when we get together for music time he will just grab it to "sing" into it as well...he has a ball.

 "Who doesn't need a kazoo?" 2007-12-10
By Lady In La Grange (California)
Hohner has a pretty good reputation. This little plastic kazoo is just fine for a little tootling when nothing but a kazoo will do. If you are a serious kazoo player (is that an oxymoron?), I suggest looking elsewhere. For entertaining the kids or for getting them interested in playing a a real instrument (sorry, kazoo lovers), a kazoo is a great place to start.

 "Lots of Fun" 2009-08-17
By A. Duran (California)
I wanted something inexpensive and colorful to outfit my infant's instrument collection. This one is proving more difficult for our 10 month old to play than the kazoo (the opposite of daddy), but I'm sure he'll eventually get it and then I'll have to buy one for myself to play with.

Seems durable, the plastic is nice to use since I know some metal harmonicas can have a metallic taste to them.

It's actually very easy to make sounds that are musical and easy to make up "songs", my wife and I fight over who gets to play it next...should've bought two or three!

I will plan to buy a more professional harmonica for myself down the road because I really like playing the harmonica now that this one has introduced me to it.

 "Colorful Plastic Hohner" 2009-04-09
By Bluz Suns (Alabama, United States)
I bought one of these a few years back in Austria for 4 Euros: expensive! As another reviewer said, it plays like a low end Hohner, a little leaky and a little quiet. I prefer the Hohner Special 20. But the plastic harp is lightweight, and I keep it in my bicycle bag. I have been invited to play along on a blues street jam, and I pulled that thing out an could play fairly well. The cover isn't quite smooth, and I don't like that, but it is a good harp in a pinch.

Quality and sound are similar to other low-end Hohners. A little quieter than most and certainly less expensive. Purchased four. All reeds work well. Loved the colors. Plastic has no taste or smell. Smooth playing action. I wish I had 100 to give away as gifts to friends and family. Perfect first musical instrument or as a stocking stuffer.

"Good Harmonica Holder for a Good Price" 2009-08-15
By scott (Kansas, USA)
I have seen similar harmonica holders for 3 times the price as this one (including the same one), with the same quality. I realized I never used more than a 10-hole harp so it works well with what I do since I'm not that great of a harmonica player. It generally stays in place, but if played when standing up it sometimes can shift a little around your neck, but nothing major. I'd say this a good buy for beginners.

"piercing sound for small ears" 2009-08-27
By Mom with a Master's (Washington, DC)
My two-year-old and I have a great time playing with this and other percussion instruments while listening to salsa and other music with a good beat. However, this wood block is very high-pitched and kind of hurts the ears if you play it full-out, correctly. The flip side is that it's rather difficult for a little kid to find the sweet spot on it--and get that full-out sound. I'm not sure there's a better option since its small size is both what causes the high-pitchedness and what makes it manageable for small hands! Bigger ones probably have a more mellow sound and a larger sweet spot, but will be too big for a toddler's hands.
